My reading in the Quebec election

October 1st is Election Day in Quebec, with several parties fighting for power and several issues dancing around the election ballot.

First of all, we have to vote.  This is not a privilege; this is a duty.  And we have to choose which party we are voting for.  Is there an ideal party?  For sure not.  Every party has its strengths and weaknesses; has it is own positives and negatives.

On the parties’ side, we have two right-wing parties: the CAQ and the Conservative.  While the Conservative party just came back to Quebec after a long absence, it is an identical image of the CAQ.  Do not confuse them for the Progressive Conservative, known before the rise of the Neo-Cons.

On the other hand, we have the two left-wing parties; Quebec Solidaire (QS) and the New Democratic Party of Quebec (NDPQ).  Quebec’s NDP just came back after decades.  While QS was established a few years ago. Since, it was able to increase its presence by adding new seats every year in the Quebec National Assembly and increase its share of the popular vote.  The only difference between the NDPQ and QS is that QS’ platform stands for the sovereignty of Quebec while the NDPQ is more Federal focused.

In the middle, we have the Liberal Party of Quebec; that is currently in power.  The Liberal Party as always claims to be the center party, but it is actually more just the status-quo party.
We should not forget that we also have the Green Party of Quebec and a few smaller parties.

I did not forget the PQ.  Though this party lost its raison-d’être by diverting from its leftist core principle, while just keeping the sovereignty flag as its only real agenda.
The most important thing is not to listen to promises but to read the platform or at least the highlights of each party’s platform, and to learn from history.

By reading the parties’ platforms and reviewing their history, it makes me exclude the right-wing parties; based on what we see from the Canadian Conservative party’s (Neo-con) agenda, from Trump in the USA and Ford in Ontario.  Do not destroy our future by voting for one of these models.

At the same time, we should not vote based on one issue.  We have to get the best of the displayed products; do not sign a blank check to a party.
History has taught us that a majority government is not good for the people, so as long as we do not have proportional representation that makes every vote count and not every seat count.  We should try to get a minority government that allows the people to govern and not create the dictatorship of the majority government

Polls predict that we might end up with a CAQ minority or majority, or Liberal minority.

To have a chance to get a non right-wing minority government, I think that voting for a strong left wing party is the best course.  Unless somebody thinks that my vote will make a difference in avoiding a right-wing candidate from winning.

That is how I see it.  And again the bottom line is we have to vote on October 1st, so on the morning after we don’t feel like we didn’t fulfil our duty.
